Wizards of the Coast has released another update to their Banned & Restricted list, affecting their Brawl, Vintage and Legacy formats. The biggest loser is Lurrus of the Dream-Den, which has been banned in both Vintage and Legacy formats. This card paired a bit too well with the powerful low-cost cards available in these formats, and Lurrus decks were achieving win rates of over 55% in both formats. WotC noted that cards are usually restricted in Vintage rather than outright banned, but they noted that restricting the card would not make it any more useful, so it was outright banned instead.
Three other cards have been banned, as well. In Legacy, Zirda, the Dawnwaker has also been banned, as it has a very high win rate in decks that pair it with Grim Monolith. In Brawl, Drannith Magistrate has been banned for shutting down too many commander cards too effectively. Winota, Joiner of Forces has also been banned from the Brawl format, as WotC believes the card is stifling play too much and leading to decreased variety.
There were no updates to the B&R lists for Standard, Pioneer and Modern with this update. The change will go into effect on May 18 for both tabletop and Magic Online, and on May 21 for Magic: the Gathering Arena. A full list of banned and restricted cards can be found here.
