Wizards of the Coast has banned the card Field of the Dead from Magic: The Gathering - Arena's Historic format.
The decision came down despite decks that run it not being at the top of the heap performance-wise. That stated, it had a high enough win rate and was prevalent enough that WotC considers it an unhealthy card for the format as it encourages an overabundance of aggressive decks.
"This effect scales with the ubiquity of Field of the Dead decks, and recent sets have given the deck several powerful additions, including Cultivate, Explore, and, most recently, Hour of Promise," writes WotC's Jay Parker. "As a result of this we have seen both the popularity and win rate of Field of the Dead decks steadily climb, and it is currently one of the most played Best-of-One decks and, by far, the most popular Best-of-Three deck."
WotC states that, without removing Field of the Dead from the format, they don't see things changing any time soon.
"We also feel that Field of the Dead is unlikely to be a healthy part of the format anytime soon, so suspension is the wrong approach," comments Parker.
The ban is effective immediately.
