A new Kickstarter campaign was just launched by artist Rebecca Leveille, known to many Magic: the Gathering players as Rebecca Guay. Guay was an artist for Magic from 1996 to 2009 who created the art for 161 cards such as Heartmender and Planeswalker's Favor, and since then she's been creating gallery artwork that's received acclaim from publications such as the New York Post. Now, she has launched a Kickstarter campaign for her new upcoming art book, entitled The Present. This book will be over 160 pages long, containing all of her paintings from 2014-2020, as well as more than 20 new sketches from her early Magic period.
Backers will be able to receive a variety of rewards, ranging from an online studio visit with Guay (for $35) to the original "The Dye Seller" painting from 1996 (for a whopping $4,000). Backers can also get rewards such as placemats, face masks, signed prints, jigsaw puzzles and more. The art book itself is not available as a reward, but all backers who pledge $150 or more will be able to buy the book at a discount, and all backers who pledge $500 or more will receive a free signed copy with a simple sketch.
In addition to the book itself, Guay has stated that the campaign will help to finance a reprint of the TRADE edition of her Evolution art book, as well as her gallery work; several of the reward tiers include signed copies of Evolution. Guay also announced that she was contributing her art to Magic once again, with a card that is set to be released in May 2021. If the campaign becomes sufficiently funded, backers can receive a playmat or a print of the new piece, which she stated she cannot reveal before its release.
The campaign has already blasted through its $60,000 goal with 35 days to go, so The Present will certainly be seeing publication. Anyone interested in backing the art book and potentially receiving a backer reward can find the Kickstarter campaign here.
