Post Malone and the $800,000 Black Lotus

There are lots of famous Magic: The Gathering players out there outside of those on the pro tour. Who? Patton Oswalt, Seth Rogen, and Allie Brosh (just to name a few). And there's also one who got in a lot more than most people think. That includes one crazy thing that kind of upset the pricing model of Magic cards for years to come.

Post Malone is a rapper and Magic: The Gathering connoisseur.

Earlier this month, he even offered a $100,000 prize for someone to play him and win. You don't see a lot of celebrities do that

He was also one of the people who helped reboot Friday Night Magic and has appeared on many videos about Magic. It's a lot. He's quickly become to Magic what Jimmy Carter is to building houses for needy families. But there was something else big he did in 2022 people might have missed.

Back in June, Malone actually became the person who spent the most money on a single Magic card in history. And to answer a few questions out of the gate: Yes,Black Lotus it was a Black Lotus (an artist print, at that) and, yes, it was signed by artist Christopher Rush. But, as he admitted to Howard Stern on his radio show, he also spent $800,000 on it.

This was a big deal, but not specifically because a millionaire bought something expensive. Rather, it's it significantly raised the bar on how much rare card can sell for.

Before Malone, the most spent on a Black Lotus was only a bit over $160,000. And it was also way over the most ever even for an asking price, which the 1996 World Champion Card had set at $200,000 a few years back. And unlike Black Lotus, there was only one of those ever made.

And now, with $800,000 out there as a new highwater mark, it means we will likely see prices only grow ever higher. After all, with a Black Lotus going up hundreds of thousands of dollars, why not others? A new price point also means Magic cards are now even more of an investment than possible.

But hey, it also means that someone who always wanted one got one, and that's kind of in the Magic spirit as well. You play, learn, move up, and soon you are getting the deck of your dreams.
