A look at MTG's upcoming sets: Marvel's Spider-Man, Avatar, and beyond

After the release of Edge of Eternities on Aug. 1, Magic: The Gathering will see two Universes Beyond sets come out before finally returning to in-universe Magic.

Here's what we know.

Magic: The Gathering® | Marvel's Spider-Man

Due to release on Sept. 26, 2025, Marvel's Spider-Man brings the web-slinging comic book super hero to the Magic: The Gathering collectible card game.

Translating the modern-day setting and feel of Spider-Man into a game that has a very heavy fantasy aesthetic was a bit of a challenge according to MTG executive producer, Mike Turian.

"I think, to me, the real challenge is getting the details exactly right," he comments.  "It's, okay, how do you bring the expression to light in a way that's true and resonant to that property and is also distinct...so that it brings the best out of both Magic and, in this case, Spider-Man."

A special Marvel's Spider-Man preview panel is scheduled during San Diego Comic Con next week where even more details will be shared.  One thing we do know, though, is that Wizards will be releasing scene boxes similar to what they did with The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle Earth. We also know that there will be no Commander decks for the set (as will be the case with the Avatar: The Last Airbender set as well).

"Magic: The Gathering | Marvel's Spider-Man and Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender will not have Commander Decks as a part of their lines," says Wizards Play Network community manager, Nelson Brown.  "Our releases may experiment with different product mixes based on overall set design, audience, and in some cases, to test new product types."

The set will also be available in normal Play and Collector's booster packs as well as via a bundle containing nine Play boosters, 30 basic lands, an alternate-art promo card, two reference cards, a spindown die, and a card storage box.

Marvel's Spider-Man will be a Standard-legal release.

Magic: The Gathering® | Avatar: The Last Airbender™

Based on the Nickelodeon cartoon, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender is scheduled for release on Nov. 21, 2025.

"It is saying 'what's awesome about Avatar: The Last Airbender and great -- how do we bring that to Magic," says Turian.  "This is what's true about the property -- once again, what does that mean from a gameplay perspective?"

While not too much is known about the set as of yet (save for it not having Commander decks), more will be known next month.  Wizards of the Coast will give a first look at the set on August 12 as part of the company's WeeklyMTG show.

Lorwyn Eclipsed

Carrying a release date of Jan. 23, 2026, Lorwyn Eclipsed brings Magic: The Gathering back in-universe.  And, as the name might suggest, it brings the game back to the Lorwyn/Shadowmoor setting for the first time in decades.

"For me, it's a full-circle moment of, because I'm the executive producer for Lorwyn Eclipsed as well and being the game design lead for Morningtide, it's...I was very familiar with the world when we returned," tells Turian.

At this point, pretty much all that's publicly known about the set has been conveyed through the name and the couple of art pieces showcased during MagicCon Las Vegas 2025.

"We've gone back and tapped into a lot of the classic Lorwyn artists and that sort of whimsical style, but now, with the Shadowmoor, there's sort of a dark and whimsical feel as well," says Turian.  "For fans of Magic art, I think that Lorwyn Eclipsed will really deliver above and beyond."

Secrets of Strixhaven

Magic: The Gathering will be returning to another known location in Secrets of Strixhaven, which will be the second set released that takes place on the plane of Arcavios.

While not much is yet known about the set, it's confirmed to be the set released after Lorwyn Eclipsed.

"The world that we created with Strixhaven, it's super exciting to me," comments Turian.  "One of my goals when I worked on the original Strixhaven was I wanted to make this world beloved and with the Mystical Archive and everything that Strixhaven has to offer that Magic returns to."
