The Rabiah Scale, Updated

Magic: The Gathering's Rabiah Scale has been in place for decades and ranks what the chances are that Magic will return to a specific plane.

Chances are ranked from 1-10, with MTG Head Designer Mark Rosewater saying the following of the scale:

  • Level 1: Will definitely see again
  • Level 2: Will definitely see again, but not necessarily right away
  • Level 3: Will most likely do again, probably many times
  • Level 4: Will most likely do again, but they have issues that make them less of a guarantee
  • Level 5: We need to find the right place to bring it back, but I'm optimistic
  • Level 6: We need to find the right place to bring it back, but I'm a little less optimistic
  • Level 7: It's unlikely to return, but possible if the right environment comes along
  • Level 8: It's unlikely to return, but possible if the stars align
  • Level 9: I never say never, but this would require a minor miracle
  • Level 10: I never say never, but this would require a major miracle

Level 1 has familiar planes like Dominara, Innistrad, and Ravnica - all planes that have either proved to be popular with players or profitable for Wizards of the Coast. Level 10 has planes like Rabiah, which isn't actually WotC's own IP, and Bablovia, the steampunk last seen once in an Un-set and not since.

Recently, the scale has seen some updates, some pretty surprising. Going down the upcoming expansion list through to Q1 2026, there are returns to Tarkir, Lorwyn, and Arcavios (where the Strixhaven expansion was set). They had scale rankings of 4, 6, and 3 (respectively), meaning were were likely to see them again, but with some taking more time than others. Lorwyn, for example, is coming back for the first time since 2007.

Recently-visited planes also had numbers recently shifted around. Thunder Junction got a 6. Same with New Capenna. Bloomburrow, one of the most popular sets and settings in years, got ranked a 2 right off the bat, meaning a return will probably happen before the decade is out and that it likely was a best-seller. Duskmourn, which debuts in the set Duskmourn: House of Horror this Friday, has yet to be announced, but we should know what their number is come late October.

Future 2026 sets are likely to be announced soon. Right now we only know of the return to Arcavios set in early 2026. And by the Rabiah scale we have the update for, there are a lot of contenders.
