LGS Owners Sound Off on Magic's Upcoming Marvel Set

Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes, the next entry into Magic's Marvel crossover sets, doesn't come out until June, but that's not stopping local game store owners and workers from making their opinions known.

Says Wizards of the Coast about the upcoming set: "In 2025, Magic: The Gathering | Marvel's Spider-Man invited web-slingers to become spell-slingers, and in 2026 we're soaring into Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes, a massive set that dramatically expands the scale of our collaboration with Marvel. Drawing on decades of Marvel history, it brings together iconic Super Heroes, notorious villains, and unforgettable Marvel Comics' moments into one incredible release."

The set releases June 26 with its prerelease weekend beginning June 19.

With nearly five months before the set's release, sentiment for the set doesn't seem too optimistic if you ask those who own and work local game stores.

"Please print an in-universe version of this," comments Dave Sheedy of Flights 2 Game & Hobby Shop in Colonie, New York. "We the millions of players of the past 30 years don't want this IP cash grab."

Of course, the poor reception and sales from Magic's previous Marvel release, Marvel's Spider-Man, might be influencing their opinions.

"Not me side-eyeing all the Spider-Man product collecting dust," comments Jazmyn Lyons, owner of The Realm of Toys & The Nerd Room in Williams Lake, British Columbia.

Tim Gatehouse, owner of Gatehouse Games in Altoona, Penn., has a slightly more direct opinion: "More garbage U.B. sets to further ruin my metrics for when good sets finally show up. Hooray."

Adds Ian Struckhoff of The Fourth Place, a gaming store in Hanover, New Hampshire: "I think after the disaster of Spider-Man this should have delayed, and reworked as a Doomsday or Secret Wars tie-in.  Everyone is now expecting TMNT and Marvel to be a dud."

Not everyone is being entirely negative about the upcoming Marvel set, though.

"We’re pretty excited! The UB has had a great influence on obtaining new Players," says Lenny Van Scyoc of Enchanted Realms & Gifts in Colorado Springs, Col.

Wizards of the Coast is saying that Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes will be one of the biggest product lineups they've ever released with not just Play Boosters and Collector Boosters, but also a new Beginner Box, Jumpstart Boosters, four Commander decks (plus four Collector's Edition Commander decks), Scene Boxes, a Draft Night, and more.
