The Marvel Superdrop Release

Last week at the New York Comic Con, Wizards of the Coast showcased their upcoming Magic: The Gathering corporate tie-in with Marvel.

While Marvel cards were expected this year, the ones they previewed were the Secret Lair Drop ones, with the 28 coming in on drop day as legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage.

In all, they are mostly based on movie appearances of everything, albeit with some influences from the comics. So, going down the list as unveiled last week:

First is an artifact that's an auto-include in all Commander decks.  Beyond that, though...

BLACK PANTHER

Black Panther has six cards, but only is one a creature. In fact, he has one land here, as well as a token.

CAPTAIN AMERICA

Captain America has five cards and goes fully iconic with some of the art. These also include a few iterations of the character. As for the mechanics and everything, pretty serviceable.

IRON MAN

Next up is Iron Man and set and his seems to be the strongest. With little surprise it's artifact (err... "invention") focused.

STORM

Moving on to the X-Men, Storm is an interesting choice. As far as card choices go, it's intuitive and least complicated of the character sets.  Plus the inclusion of Ice Storm, a card from MTG's original days, is a nice touch.

WOLVERINE

And, to "cap" it all off we have Wolverine. It would have been clever to put in Deadpool in one or have him be a character here, but then everyone would be playing those two all the time most likely. Sadly, most are the comics based ones here and not of the Fox/Disney movie series, but the cards are pretty powerful too.

Overall, each group of cards will cost $40 for non-foil and $50 for foil. The emblem is with any order of at least $200.

The Superdrop itself comes out on November 4th. Altogether, the cards are pretty good, but they should have waited to be closer to a movie premiere date or to the sets next year.  But hey, think of this as an amuse bouche for that.
