The Peelable Plains/Battlefield Forge Card: Magic's Strange Foray Into A Different Kind Of Card

In 2021, Magic: The Gathering tried out a radically different kind card in their then new Secret Layer sub-brand.

For decades, the collectible card game has been experimenting with the physical cards themselves. Sometimes the card is flippable to a new one (like the Werewolf cards of Innistrad) while others had additional mechanics go into play as a card subset when tapped. And let's not forget that a few early cards literally had a mechanic where you throw the card and it destroys whatever it touches (ahem, Chaos Orb). But in 2021 a Secret Lair card was truly odd, as it had a peelable sticker that, depending if you peeled it off or not, was either one type of land or another.

Back in 2021, Secret Lair Drops were still somewhat new, but already they were known as the experimental sub-brand of Magic the Gathering. They were giving artist showcases, trying out what would become IP set cards, and just showing off the expanse of the game. And one such drop had art by the art collective MSCHF. While most of these were drastic new art for existing cards, the bonus card with the drop was a bit...off. To many, it was just a Plains card with a golf course:

But, soon people found out the true meaning, thanks to some people getting early versions of the card. The white land suddenly became a Battlefield Forge land by peeling off the top layer:

Essentially this altered the card permanently, leading many to decide between one or the other with it.  According to MSCHF, this card was to "reveal our true feelings about golf". As in golf courses are a waste of land and resources, and since they are a waste of land, the secondary land here will be of more use. And, for MTG, it was a brand-new type of card that really hasn't been repeated much since.

And since it was a Secret Lair Drop card, only a finite number were made. It still goes for a decent amount on card trader sites, who have the added pain of saying if the top has been peeled off yet or not. MTG publisher Wizards of the Coast hasn't ruled out a card like it in the future, but considering the gimmick aspect of it, it's unlikely to come out in any core sets or expansions.

Although the card also did raise the notion that golf courses are now canon somewhere in the Magic universe.
