Magic's Commander Panel: One Year In

One year ago, Wizards of the Coast took over management of the fan-created Commander format.

Over the course of the past year, much has happened with the format including the un-banning of some cards, the implementation of a new bracket system designed to assist players in assessing their decks, and more.

"I think it's been really great," says WotC's Gavin Verhey, who heads up the Commander Panel.

He continues, stating "I still think there's some work to be done. We've identified some stuff for the future."

INTERVIEW: MTG'S GAVIN VERHEY TALKS ABOUT THE FIRST YEAR OF THE COMMANDER PANEL

One of the things the Commander Panel is working on for the future is a refinement of the bracket system.  They're changes that Verhey says comes from Commander being a format "of the people."

"[Commander] as created as a fan format; I wanted to keep the power with the fans, which is why this...panel exists at all," he explains.  "I think that all of us get the feedback that we get and we take it all the way to the top."

As for what Commander players can expect in year two, Verhey says there are some things already in the works.  Many of those things were a product of the Commander Summit that WotC hosted not too long ago.

"We brought in the Format Panel to Wizards," he says.  "We talked for three days about a bunch of stuff we're interested in for the format and you'll hear the results of some of that soon."
