Welcome back to Who Is on Magic Untapped as we explore the stories and origins of characters from throughout the Magic: The Gathering multiverse.  I’m Barry White.

This time around, we travel to the plane of Ulgrotha and tell the story of a petty thief turned immortal crime boss.

Here is the story of Eron the Relentless.

Growing up a street urchin and petty thief in the city-state of Aysen on the Northern Plains of Ulgrotha, Eron’s life changed when he visited the Floating Island.

There, at the Wizards’ School, he met the Wizard Savant Bernatheen.  The Wizard Savant promised to cast a life-altering spell on the young thief in exchange for him sneaking into Castle Sengir and stealing a book of dark magic from Grandmother Sengir’s library.  After hours of searching undetected in the castle library, Eron found the tome near the sleeping crone and pilfered it.

Returning to the Wizards’ School on the Floating Isle, he presented it to the Wizard Savant who offered the thief any spell from the book to be cast upon him as a reward.  Taking a gamble, Eron asked for the tome’s final spell.  Bernatheen did as agreed and cast a spell of immortality upon Eron.

Of course, Grandmother Sengir and her “grandson,” the Baron, discovered the book’s disappearance and traced it back to the Wizards’ School’s Wizard Savant.  As punishment for the theft, the Baron turned Bernatheen into a werewolf.

Eron, now immortal, was not without inconvenience, however, as while he could neither die nor age, minor wounds would still scar him and his body would still ache as would anybody’s.  At first, this gift of immortality was exciting for the thief as he would take on impossible tasks and foes, only to come out the victor.  This excitement, though, waned through the years and Eron soon found himself simply roaming the Homelands searching for adventure.

He eventually traveled to Koskun Keep high up in the mountains.  Just for fun, he announced himself King of the Goblins.  The goblins, of course, killed him.  Eron, though, simply got back up and claimed lordship over the goblins once more.  The goblins, of course, killed him again only for Eron to rise once more.  Eventually, the goblins saw Eron as a demigod and accepted his rule over them.

All of these deaths Eron had encountered, whether it be by the goblins or by others, took a toll on the immortal thief as his worldview and ideals of justice degraded.  In fact, the man became quite cruel and thrived on retribution as a means of punishment.

Now recognized as a ruler beyond just Koskun Keep, he got the attention of another of the plane’s immortals: The vampiric Baron Sengir.  The Baron many times attempted to secure a meeting with the Goblin King, but Eron always refused his audience.

Concerned that the Baron is wanting to meet him only to subjugate him and his goblins, he used his skills at thievery and skullduggery to smuggle food and supplies into the villages that lay within the Dark Barony – the lands under direct control of Baron Sengir.  To ensure the goods’ delivery, Eron bartered an alliance with the people of his homeland of Aysen in which his people won’t raid their lands so long as they assist in delivering support to those villages.

Despite supporting the villages of the Dark Barony in defiance of Baron Sengir and being the self-proclaimed King of the Goblins in Koskun Keep – an area known as a refuge not just for the goblins, but also for Ulgrotha’s various criminals and scoundrels, Eron often turned a blind eye to the various sources of strife within his realm.  Despite this, he found a certain level of disdain for two criminal refugees in particular: Chandler and Joven.  This is mainly because the two conspired to successfully steal a prized possession of his: a jewel-encrusted ebony rhino.  The immortal thief pledged to personally make the duo pay for a very long time should they ever be caught.

Despite being immortal, Eron isn’t immune to risk management.  As such, he often hires the minotaurs from Anaba as bodyguards (though this is mostly so he can eventually locate their hidden homeland as to bring it into his growing empire of corruption).
