Magic Untapped tells the story of Feroz, a planeswalker who made Ulgroth his home.

Welcome back to Who Is on Magic Untapped as we explore the lore of characters from throughout the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. I am Barry White.
In this episode, we return to the long-forgotten plane of Ulgrotha to learn a bit about the story of the planeswalker who lived and died there. I’m speaking, of course, of Feroz.
Born on a still unknown plane within the multiverse, Feroz was one of the few (if any) planeswalkers who felt that the act of summoning beings to do the bidding of planeswalkers was immoral.
As such, he dedicated his life to studying cultures and civilizations across the multiverse. It’s in these studies that he journeyed to Ulgrotha. There, he befriended an Anaba minotaur named Sandruu. The two hit it off quite well and would often go off adventuring together.
During one such excursion, after the pair had fought off a territorial root spider, Feroz met another planeswalker – one not native to Ulgrotha. In fact, she had happened upon the plane by happenstance as she was wandering the multiverse after the corruption of her own realm.
This planeswalker is the angelic Serra. The pair fell in love and eventually married.
Shortly after their marriage, they were summoned to the An-Havva Inn where they met with Baron Sengir, a powerful vampire that had assumed lordship over most of the realm. Noticing their power, he demanded that the pair not interfere with his plans.
Of course, Feroz and Serra did exactly the opposite. Ignoring his warning, they helped the people of Ulgrotha defend themselves against the Baron’s draconian rule.
For Feroz’s part, he founded the Wizards School on the Floating Isle and took on the title of First Master. There, he trained many a wizard. Even Sandruu was a pupil of Feroz, the planeswalker helping the minotaur to find his spark and eventually ascend to being a planeswalker himself.
Feroz even went so far as to take his lessons outside of the school, visiting the city of Onella along the Aysen Coast where he taught their warriors the magic of shapeshifting. These “Beast Walkers,” as they would become known, would be on constant watch for the Baron’s minions in defense of Aysen.
A while after that, Sandruu returned home with a loving companion of his own – Kristina of the Woods. Problem is, though, that Kristina was supposed to have been in a relationship with another: the powerful planeswalker Taysir.
Taysir followed the minotaur to Ulgrotha and attacked. After besting his foe, Taysir banished Sandruu to a remote plane from which it would take the minotaur a millennia or more to find his way back. Feroz, in revenge for the banishment of his friend, split Taysir’s skill in twine with a broadsword when he wasn’t looking, killing the man on the spot.
To prevent any further incursions from outsiders, Feroz formed a magical shield around the plane. Known as Feroz’s Ban, it prevented not just outsiders from visiting, but also from planeswalkers from ever summoning a denizen of Ulgrotha to fight in their battles. While mana intensive on Ulgrotha, Feroz thought it necessary for the greater good of the plane.
Ulgrotha now safe (the Baron’s threats aside), Feroz set back to work in his laboratory and resumed his research. Much like how curiosity killed the cat, however, Feroz’s research would wind up getting the better of him. As he was studying a fire elemental that had become somehow trapped in ice, it exploded, killing him.
Heartbroken and in anguish, Serra couldn’t bare to remain on the plane without her love. She departed for Dominaria, but that’s a story for a different video.
I hope you enjoyed this look at one of Magic: The Gathering’s more forgotten planeswalkers.
