Welcome back to Who Is on Magic Untapped where we explore the origins and stories of characters from throughout the Magic: The Gathering multiverse.  I am Barry White.

In this episode, we take a look at a character that was first introduced as the default player avatar in the Magic: The Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers video game in 2009: the masked planeswalker, Vronos.

After growing up on the plane of Innistrad, Vronos was raised in the Church of Avacyn and joined the church’s cathars as an inquisitor once he was of age.  Rising through the rank of elite inquisitor and having earned the nickname of “The Grey Fencer,” he was out performing his duties when he was attacked by a pack of young werewolves.

Fearing for his life, the shock of the attack triggered something inside of him as, unbeknownst to him, he had within him the spark of a planeswalker.

The trauma triggered the spark to ignite and Vronos ascended from a mere human of Innistrad to a planeswalker.  He suddenly vanished from sight, transporting himself far away from the attacking werewolves.

He awoke on Alara, wounded and being studied by a group of Vedalken Ethersworn.  In exchange for the Vedalken learning about him, he demanded knowledge of his own.

The Vedalken allowed him access to some of their sacred texts.  Within the tomes, Vronos learned the basic nature of a strange alloy metal known as etherium and practiced the arcane art of etherium sculpting.

Using this new talent, the planeswalker repaired his ravaged face with etherium implants and crafted a filigreed etherium mask with which to cover it all.

Over the next few months, Vronos would continue to study and travel, but guilt would catch up to him.

Penitent, he returned to Innistrad to seek forgiveness from the church for his abandonment.  As penance, he was tasked by Avacyn herself with locating a cursed hunter by the name of Garruk Wildspeaker so that she could cure him.
Using his tracking and investigation skills from his time as an elite inquisitor, Vronos is able to locate the cursed planeswalker.  He confronts the hunter and attempts to apprehend him so that he could take the hunter back to Avacyn to be purified, but Garruk proved to be too much the adversary for him.

Swiftly, Garruk dispatched Vronos and kept the fallen planeswalker’s mask as a trophy.

As for Vronos in card form, the character has seen print only once.  And that was in the set Commander Masters in the form of Vronos, Masked Inquisitor.
