A product for the upcoming Star Trek Universes Beyond Magic: The Gathering set is boldly going to the cancellation bin.
The previously planned Beginner Box for the set, which releases Nov. 13, was unexpectedly cancelled by Wizards of the Coast on Monday, Sept. 21.
"Due to delays in production, logistics, and shipping, we will no longer be producing the Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek Beginner Box," the company stated on its website.
In response to the cancellation, Nelson Brown, Wizards of the Coast's Wizards Play Network Community Manager provided advice for WPN stores and employees.
"For Magic Academy and other learn-to-play and Magic demo experiences you have scheduled or plan to run, continue to use Welcome Decks, Jumpstart or Play Booster packs, and previously provided Beginner Boxes (where available)," he says.
It's a move that caught some store owners and event organizers by surprise.
"Sad," says Austin Carter, Event Manager at Victory Road Collections in Overland Park, Kan.. "I host an Academy event the Monday before a prerelease and when there is a matching Beginner box I utilize it to help new players understand the systems."
Others found it as no surprise at all.
"I mean you have product issues on reality fracture but decided to release another set five weeks after I mean don’t need captain hindsight here, comments Matt Weik, who works at Paper and Pixels in Port Charlotte, Fla. "At least it’s the prob worst product in the line but at this point it’s just negligence."
Others, though, are celebrating the product's cancellation.
"Thank you for canceling this product," says Sean Johnson of Brute Force Games in San Diego, Calif. "I always appreciate attempts at new player products but Avatar and Marvel both sold terribly."
The status of the rest of the Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek product lineup, at this time, remains unchanged.
