The Planeswalker Known As Deb Thomas

There are dozens of planeswalkers out there. One of them goes by the name Deb Thomas.

When it comes to choosing planeswalkers, everyone has their favorites, be it Ajani Goldmane, Jace, or Tamiyo" But, if you opt to play 'whatever cards, who cares if they're legal' house rules Magic, there is kind of a secret planeswalker you can play - A CFO!

Let's back up a bit. From 1998 to 2023, Deborah Thomas was the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for Hasbro, the parent company of Wizards of the Coast. During her time at Hasbro, she helped oversee the acquisition of Wizards of the Coast in 1999 and integrate them more and more into Hasbro. While fans have said both negative and positive things about Hasbro's ownership over the years, she has been credited as one of the main drivers keeping the trading card games profitable and yet also distinctly unique at the same time.

So how did she become a planeswalker? Well, in 2022, she announced her retirement. Seeing all that she did, Magic did something usually reserved for huge announcements or whenever Richard Garfield went through another life event. They made her her own card. And guess what they named this celebration card? Why, the fantasy name of Deb Thomas of course.

The card even noted her love of dogs on it. According to the card (which cost 3R):

Whenever an Employee enters under your control, put a loyalty counter on Deb Thomas.

+1: Create a 1/1 red Employee creature token.

−X: Employees and Dogs you control get +X/+0 until end of turn.

Like other celebration cards, this is meant mainly as a show card, something of appreciation. It isn't even legal in any format thanks to employees not being a registered creature. But it is out there. An unknown number were printed, although secondhand sites don't seem to have any. As such, websites such as Scryfall don't even have a price for it.

But it is there, waiting for someone to play it during a house rules game, and everyone wondering just what the hell an employee token looks like. Or why she doesn't have amazing CFO powers. You would think she would at least have a strange "overhead" power, or a corporate meeting gathering spell.

But one thing is for certain - it's hard to beat Deb.
