Wizards of the Coast has banned a classic card in their latest banned and restricted announcement for Magic: The Gathering.
The card, Food Chain, which has been around since 1999's Mercadian Masques has been officially banned from play in MTG's Historic format. Most recently, the card was included in the recently releases Universes Beyond set Magic: The Gathering | Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It's a move that Wizards now sees as a mistake.
"We missed the interaction between Sigardian Evangel and Food Chain, which combo to create an arbitrarily large number of 3/1s," they state in the announcement. "Competitive builds utilizing this interaction are still developing, but they are already near the top of Best-of-Three in both metagame share and win percentage. This is much higher than we would want for a deck that can consistently combo and end the game on turn three, and semi-consistently combo on turn two, especially with the frustrating digital execution the combo requires."
The company also states that they'd rather keep turn-two combos out of the Historic format altogether.
Historic is a format specific to the online game Magic: The Gathering - Arena.
No other cards were banned in any other formats per Wizards' March 23 banned and restricted announcement.
