TCGPlayer, a popular online trading card game retail website, has partnered with MagiKids, a Magic: The Gathering nonprofit charity, to assist youth with the popular collectible card game.
Through this partnership, MagiKids will be able to make use of otherwise unwanted MTG cards by diverting them away from landfills and, instead, send them to after-school programs where students will be able to learn and play the collectible card game.
"This mission is close to TCGPlayer's heart, so we wanted to get involved to help make a positive impact," says TCGPlayer. "At the end of last year, we donated 1.2 million cards to MagiKids and we're excited to donate another 700,000 cards this month in celebration of Earth Day."
The donations of Magic cards to MagiKids don't just help save the earth. They also help kids find a new hobby, new friends, and new skills.
"Donations of cards and supplies, then, do two main things-- they help save the planet, and they help young people learn in school and after school by upcycling 25 tons of TCG stuff per year through MagiKids," says charity founder Jason Egginton.
You don't have to be a company like TCGPlayer to help MagiKids support America's students. In fact, anyone can donate unwanted MTG cards. Plus, the donations might be tax deductible (check with your tax expert on that one).
MagiKids accepts Magic card donations via mail or in-person. If you're a local game store owner, you can support the charity by running fundraising events in your store, donating product, or simply by letting people know about MagiKids. Plus, if you're a teacher or simply want to take advantage of MagiKids' support in forming your own youth-oriented MTG club or program, you can apply to run a MagiKids group or sign up for a volunteer opportunity to spread the magic to more kids across North America.
"We have MTG classes in 4,000 schools and libraries, rigorously protected by our privacy policies," says Egginton. "Please email your local school district, library, and/or community enrichment programs to see if you can help. If they do not have a MagiKids program and want one, please apply for a kit."
MagiKids has been using the game of Magic: The Gathering to help America's youth since 2016.
