Wizards of the Coast has confirmed that promo packs are not coming out for the hotly anticipated Magic: The Gathering Set, Universes Beyond - Final Fantasy.
Promo packs are popularly used as prize support for events such as Friday Night Magic.
"Magic: The Gathering—Final Fantasy specific promo packs were not produced or distributed," states Wizards Play Network (WPN) Community Manager Nelson Brown.
According to Brown, the number seasonal promo packs that were provided to WPN stores along with the previous set, Tarkir: Dragonstorm, was calculated based upon the total number of weeks between that set's season and that of Final Fantasy's. That number is intended to cover both seasons.
As for local gaming stores that became WPN members on or after the release of Tarkir: Dragonstorm and might not have received any promo packs at all to support their events, Brown has some bad news.
"If your store was approved for the network after the cutoff date for a set's allocations and materials, there is no guarantee we can provide those seasonal materials," he explains. "That said, pending available inventory, our Support team will often seek to obtain a prorated quantity of materials for the store."
The next shipment of promo packs for WPN stores is assumed to arrive in time for the release of Edge of Eternity, which comes out Aug. 1.
UPDATE:
Wizards of the Coast Wednesday afternoon also confirmed that neither the upcoming sets Marvel’s Spider-Man nor Avatar: The Last Airbender will be having promo packs produced as well.
Says Brown: “…no set-themed promo packs are being produced or distributed for Magic: The Gathering—Marvel's Spider-Man or Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender. The quantity of promo packs being sent for Edge of Eternities was calculated based on the full run of weeks for the EOE, SPM, and TLA seasons.”
